Khanis and Jirwan

Khanis and Jirwan

These sites form part of the aqueduct built by Sennacharib ca.700 BC to transport water to the vast palaces of Nineveh where elaborate gardens and farms were watered. The ruins of Jirwan are the oldest aqueduct and bridge ruins in the world and the caves and carvings of Khanis provide a fascinating glimpse into the empire of one of history’s greatest rulers.
